What the online MSN FNP covers
The FNP is one of five master's tracks in Sacred Heart's 2026-27 graduate catalog, and it prepares you for the ANCC or AANP family nurse practitioner exam. Coursework is online. Clinical hours happen in person, at sites you secure. The 42 credits divide into a 9-credit core and a 33-credit specialty.

Sacred Heart lists a 2.5-year duration at the fastest pace, one class and occasionally two per semester, and the plan must be finished within six years. The catalog also credits NU 551 with meeting the 30-hour advanced pharmacology requirement for a Connecticut APRN license.
The clinical path, course by course
Your precepted hours sit in four courses taken in a fixed order, and each one centers on a different population. Every clinical course is a separate placement request: the Contract Request Form asks for the course number and for the site's primary and secondary populations (primary and preventive care, women's health, pediatrics or specialty care).

Prerequisites lock the order. NU 561 requires NU 551, NU 552 and NU 566. NU 606 and NU 607 share prerequisites and both follow NU 561, and NU 621 requires both. 540 hours, plus lab hours at residency
The catalog, the 2026-27 online student guide and the SHU Online FAQ all give 540 clinical hours. The lab hours are where they part ways: the guide lists 15, while the catalog lists 10 and says they are completed during the first residency. The FAQ also describes the 540 hours as spread over three semesters, although the guide and catalog place them in four courses. Your student guide and academic advisor settle which figure your cohort follows.
An hour counts only when it is logged in E*Value at an approved site, with an approved preceptor, after clearance. Hours logged anywhere else are deleted from E*Value and bring a program warning. The FNP clinical hours page shows how the total splits across the four courses.
Timing against Sacred Heart's deadlines
The FNP rule is brief and strict. By the end of week 10 of NU 552, and in week 10 of every clinical course, your next site and preceptor must be identified, approved by your academic advisor and sent to the MSN Online NP Programs Clinical Coordinator with the preceptor's resume, license and certification. The week-10 deadline page covers it in full. These dates sit around it:

The costly mistake: treating week 10 as the day the search begins. Week 10 is when the approval packet is due, so the search belongs in the weeks before it.
Who can precept you, and where
Per Sacred Heart's preceptor portal, an FNP preceptor is a physician (MD or DO), physician assistant or APRN whose license covers the state of practice. Physicians and APRNs also need board certification, and every preceptor needs a year or more in primary care of adults, women or children. Family members and close friends are ruled out, and you confirm that on the Contract Request Form. The preceptor requirements page compares every track.
Sacred Heart's program page is direct: "you'll secure a clinical placement and may need to travel significant distances." Build the commute into every search. Connecticut residents face limited primary care openings at home and may train in any state except New York, and the preceptor portal flags a particular need for preceptors in Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Two location rules apply before any search begins. No NP clinical hours may be completed in New York; the New York clinical rule explains what residents there do. Residencies in Fairfield, Connecticut
According to the SHU Online FAQ, MSN FNP students come to Fairfield twice: a one-to-two-day clinical competencies residency during NU 552 and a second at the end of the program in NU 621, after a virtual orientation in week two of your first semester. The catalog words it two ways, once as a yearly daylong residency and once as two onsite competency residencies. Where the counts differ, your student guide and course faculty have the final word.
Each residency is pass/fail, and a failed one takes the clinical course down with it. Public pages carry no residency dates, so watch your SHU email and course site, then block those days before you and your preceptor set a clinic schedule. The residencies page lays out every program side by side.
Start term and admission
The MSN FNP program page lists one start date per year, and the FAQ places it in the fall, in August. Other SHU Online pages list January and September, or January and August, starts for the online MSN; those match the non-NP tracks, so confirm your NP intake with your enrollment coordinator.
Admission asks for a BSN with at least a 3.0 GPA, an unencumbered RN license from your home state plus one for your state of practice, liability insurance, a cleared criminal background check, a resume, two letters and an undergraduate statistics course. No GRE or GMAT is needed. On experience, the catalog's MSN list sets no minimum years, while SHU Online pages mention two years of experience for the PMHNP and the post-master's FNP certificate. Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Can I complete Sacred Heart FNP clinical hours where I work?
Possibly. Sacred Heart looks at each case: the Contract Request Form has questions about your employment at the site and any working relationship with the preceptor. The guides give no written NP rule about training on your own unit, so raise it with your academic advisor before you commit. Our workplace clinicals page explains how to present it.
Are telehealth hours allowed in Sacred Heart's online FNP?
The catalog says MSN FNP clinical hours are completed in person, or occasionally via telehealth as directed by the preceptor. Read that as an exception your preceptor arranges inside an in-person rotation, not a way to build a whole course. Ask course faculty before logging telehealth time if you are unsure it counts.
What if I cannot finish my FNP hours before the course ends?
Sacred Heart's course list includes NU 600 Continuous Enrollment, carrying 0 credits, which keeps an MSN/FNP student registered while unfinished clinical hours are completed. Your academic advisor decides whether it fits your situation. The stronger plan is a preceptor with enough weekly clinic time to finish inside the semester, which is how we screen every offer.
Does Sacred Heart assign preceptors to online FNP students?
Not in the online FNP. The 2026-27 online student guide makes identifying the practicum site the student's job. The SHU Online FAQ speaks of ongoing help from program coordinators in identifying preceptors, and the State Authorizations page adds that a Clinical Placement Coordinator helps secure the placement once you have identified a site and preceptor. Both describe support for a search you lead.
How does one late placement affect graduation?
Because the four clinical courses run in a fixed prerequisite order, a course you cannot start holds back every course after it. NU 606 and NU 607 wait on NU 561, and NU 621 waits on both. Our delayed graduation page covers how to recover when a placement slips.
