What the catalog puts in Primary Care I
The catalog title is Primary Care I: Comprehensive Primary Care of the Adult, worth 6 credits. Sacred Heart's catalog calls it "the first of four clinical courses" in the Family Nurse Practitioner track. You reach it after three prerequisites: NU 551 Advanced Pharmacology for the Nurse Practitioner, NU 552 Advanced Health Assessment for NP and NU 566 Advanced Pathophysiology for Nurse Practitioners.
The content is the well adult. You work on illness prevention and health maintenance first, then on diagnosing and treating the common problems adults bring to a primary care visit. The catalog also puts weight on the consultation role of the nurse practitioner: recognizing when a case needs another clinician's input and asking for it well.
The 180-hour figure comes from the 2026-27 MSN student guide, because the catalog's course page lists credits but no hours. Sacred Heart's certificate catalog pages put NP courses at 16 weeks, and the registrar lists MSN/FNP on its Special Trimester calendar: in 2026-27, spring runs January 4 to April 23 and late spring April 26 to August 6. Post-master's certificate students have a different compliance date, week 10 of NU 550, the course they take before NU 561.
The preceptor and practice that fit NU 561
Sacred Heart's preceptor portal asks for an "MD, DO, PA or APRN licensed in your state of practice", with board certification required for physicians and APRNs, plus at least a year of primary care experience with adults, women or children. The preceptor's practice or employer has to support the teaching too. For an adult-focused course, an internal medicine, family medicine or community health center practice with a full adult schedule gives you the volume and variety the objectives call for.
The FNP Contract Request Form asks for the site's primary and secondary population, chosen from four options: Primary/Preventive Care, Women's Health, Pediatrics and Specialty Care. Primary/Preventive Care is the natural primary entry for NU 561. A specialty office adds depth in one organ system, but this course is about common problems, so ordinary adult visits serve it best.

Going forward, NU 606 Primary Care of Children and NU 607 Primary Care for Women both list NU 561 as a prerequisite, and NU 621 requires all three. The easy mistake is reading week 10 of NU 561 as a date about the course you are in. It is the deadline for the next placement. With 180 adult hours to log, it is tempting to leave the pediatric or women's health search until the week before, and a site new to Sacred Heart may need an affiliation agreement that the student guide says can take up to nine months.

Can a specialist precept NU 561?
The Contract Request Form includes Specialty Care as a site population, and the portal accepts MD, DO, PA or APRN preceptors with primary care experience. Do post-master's FNP certificate students take NU 561?
Yes. The post-master's FNP certificate includes NU 561 with the same 180 hours, followed by NU 606, NU 607 and NU 621. Certificate students must be compliant by week 10 of NU 550, the course before their first clinical course, and they identify their own sites and preceptors just as MSN students do.
Can NU 561 hours be completed by telehealth?
Only occasionally. The catalog says MSN FNP clinical hours are in person, or occasionally via telehealth as directed by the preceptor. Telehealth is the exception, and the preceptor is the one who directs it. Build the placement around in-person clinic days and treat any telehealth visits as occasional additions within the approved placement.
What if I already work at the clinic I want for NU 561?
The FNP Contract Request Form asks whether you are employed at the site and whether you work with the preceptor in any capacity, so Sacred Heart reviews that relationship.
