Sacred Heart's 2026-27 catalog titles NU 606 Primary Care of Children and NU 607 Primary Care for Women, and each course description follows its title. NU 606 runs "birth through adolescence" across diverse infant, child and adolescent populations. NU 607 covers well-woman and antepartum care from adolescence to the menopause transition. The MSN student guide gives each course 90 clinical hours.
The catalog course pages and Sacred Heart's other course listings agree on that split, and none of them reverses it. The only wording difference involves the women's course, which one listing calls Primary Care of Women. The course number and hours are identical either way.
Adolescents are where the two meet. NU 606 runs through adolescence and NU 607 begins with adolescents, so a teenager's visit could serve either course. Log each encounter under the course you are enrolled in, and follow your course faculty on where adolescent visits count.

The catalog frames the course around "a primary, collaborative, community approach with interprofessional teams", so a practice where nurses, social workers and other clinicians share pediatric care fits the course well. The Contract Request Form page covers the rest of the form.
What 90 hours in NU 606 look like
The catalog splits the 4 credits as 3 didactic and 1 clinical, with 90 clinical hours. The prerequisite list is long: NU 501, NU 530, NU 603, NU 550, NU 566, NU 551, NU 552 and NU 561. By the time you see your first pediatric patient, every core and foundation course is behind you, along with 180 adult hours.
Ninety hours is half of NU 561's load. Spread evenly over a 16-week course, that averages under six hours a week, but hours count only after your Cleared for Clinical email and only at the approved site, so the real weekly figure depends on when clearance arrives. A preceptor who offers one steady clinic day a week usually suits this course better than one who can host you only in a long block at the end of the term.
Strong pediatric days mix well-child visits, immunizations, developmental screening and acute sick visits. Ask a prospective site how its schedule divides before you commit.
Week 10 here is about your next course
Sacred Heart's FNP rule puts a placement deadline in week 10 of every clinical course, so during NU 606 you secure whatever follows it: NU 607 if you have not taken it yet, or NU 621 if you have. The week-10 deadline page lists what must be done by then.
The two 90-hour courses share identical prerequisites and neither requires the other, so the sequence comes from your plan of study. Sacred Heart's online FAQ describes the 540 FNP hours as spread over three semesters, while the student guide spreads them across four clinical courses. Ask your academic advisor how NU 606 and NU 607 fall in your terms before you plan the searches, because two courses in one term would mean two placements approved at once.
Carrying NU 561 into pediatrics, and pediatrics into NU 621
The adult skills from NU 561 transfer, but the frame shifts. Growth and development, age-based screening and caregiver conversations replace adult chronic disease management as the daily work. Parents and guardians join nearly every visit, and your notes have to capture both the child's findings and the caregiver's concerns. The consultation habits you learned with adults extend to pediatric specialists and community services.
NU 621, the final FNP course, lists NU 606 as a prerequisite and turns to complex adult families and their members. Seeing children alongside the adults who care for them is part of how you learn to treat a family as a unit, which is the view that last course expects you to bring.

How many clinical hours are in NU 606?
Ninety. The catalog states it on the course page itself, as 3 didactic credits and 1 clinical credit with 90 clinical hours, and the 2026-27 MSN student guide gives the same figure. With NU 561, NU 607 and NU 621 it makes up the 540-hour FNP minimum, and lab hours at residency are counted separately.
Can a family practice be my NU 606 site?
It can when the practice sees enough children. On the FNP Contract Request Form you could list Primary/Preventive Care as the primary population and Pediatrics as the secondary, and Sacred Heart's portal accepts preceptors whose primary care experience includes pediatrics. Your academic advisor approves the site, so share the practice's pediatric volume when you ask.
Can a pediatric nurse practitioner precept NU 606?
Sacred Heart's portal takes APRNs who hold a license where you train, are board certified, and have spent a year or more in primary care of adults, women or pediatric patients. A board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner working in primary care fits that wording. The academic advisor and the MSN Online NP Programs Clinical Coordinator make the final decision on every preceptor.
I live in New York. Where do I complete NU 606?
Outside New York. Sacred Heart is restricted from offering APRN clinical placements in New York, so residents complete every NP clinical hour in another state. Sacred Heart's disclosures point New York students to a neighboring state and require a valid RN license there. The search for a pediatric site starts in that state.
