Sacred Heart placement help vs finding your own preceptor

Sacred Heart University asks online nursing students to identify their own clinical site and preceptor, and it backs that search with support of its own. You can search alone, lean on that support, bring in a placement service, or combine them. Below, the routes are laid out together, so the right choice for your course, your community and your calendar is easier to see.

Where every route begins

Sacred Heart says it plainly on its online MSN FNP page: "you'll secure a clinical placement and may need to travel significant distances" to reach the hours the program requires. The 2026-27 online student guide puts the same task on NP, CNL, NE and NMEL students, and the RN-BSN guide does the same for its programs. Sacred Heart then approves the site and preceptor, contracts with the site and clears you to start.

The campus hybrid FNP/DNP runs differently. Students arrange their own NU 552 observation, then work with the FNP/DNP Clinical Placement Coordinator for later courses. Whatever route you pick, the approval chain stays the same, and the finding your own preceptor guide sets out what the search involves.

Route one: searching on your own

A self-directed search can work well. You know your community, your colleagues and often a practice that already respects your work, and Sacred Heart's online FAQ notes that many students arrange hours at their current employer. A site you already know can also make the Contract Request Form easier to complete, since you can reach the right person to name as the contract contact.

The price is time. A solo search means calls and emails to practices, confirming each preceptor's license and board certification, tracking down who handles contracts and finishing it all before your deadline, on top of work and coursework. The student guide asks for "professionalism, good judgment, and due diligence" throughout, and each practice that says no sends you back to the start of the list.

Route two: Sacred Heart's own support

Sacred Heart offers real help, and it pays to know exactly what each source describes. The online FAQ says program coordinators provide "ongoing preceptor identification support throughout enrollment." The State Authorizations page adds that once you have identified a site and preceptor, the Clinical Placement Coordinator works with you to secure the placement. The College also recruits preceptors directly through inquiry forms on its preceptor portal.

For hybrid FNP/DNP students the support goes further. The FNP/DNP Clinical Placement Coordinator arranges sites for the later clinical courses and, on request, matches students to an available site. That match is binding, and a student who declines for a legitimate reason arranges a site of their own for Program Director approval.

Route three: a placement service built for Sacred Heart

A placement service takes the search off your plate, and ours is shaped around Sacred Heart's process. Choosing, or combining, the routes

Search on your own if you have a strong lead, such as a practice where you already work, a deadline months away and a track whose preceptor rules you know well. Lean on Sacred Heart's support alongside it, and fully so in the hybrid FNP/DNP, where the coordinator arranges later sites.

Bring in a placement service when the deadline is close, when your course needs a narrower setting such as pediatric primary care or child and adolescent psychiatry, when you live in Connecticut, where Sacred Heart itself notes limited primary care opportunities (see Connecticut NP preceptors), or when you simply want the search handled well. Does Sacred Heart find preceptors for online students?

Sacred Heart's student guides place the search with online students, who identify the site and preceptor for approval. Its online-programs FAQ also describes ongoing support with identifying preceptors, and the Clinical Placement Coordinator helps secure a placement once you have found it. Because the sources differ in emphasis, ask your academic advisor what help is available for your track and term.

Is a hybrid FNP/DNP coordinator match binding?

Yes. The FNP/DNP guide says that requesting the Clinical Placement Coordinator's help means accepting the given placement as is, which it calls a binding commitment. A student with an extensive and legitimate reason to decline must then arrange a site of their own, pending the Program Director's approval. The hybrid clinical courses page covers the rest.

Can I use a placement service and Sacred Heart's support at the same time?

Yes. The approval chain stays exactly as it is: your advisor, the NP clinical coordinator and the Clinical Contract & Compliance Coordinator review the placement the way they review any other. Keeping your coordinator informed while we search simply puts more people behind the same goal.

Which route is fastest?

Whichever reaches a confirmed, fully documented preceptor at a site under contract soonest. A strong personal lead at a site that already has a Sacred Heart agreement can be quick on your own. Without one, handing the search to a dedicated desk frees the weeks you would spend calling practices. Either way, start before the course that comes ahead of your clinical course.
