When a missing preceptor pushes back graduation

At Sacred Heart University a clinical course cannot be registered without an approved site and preceptor, and each clinical course opens the door to the next. One missed placement can shift every later course by one term or several. Here is how that delay builds, the rules that set your limits and how to get back on schedule.

How one missing placement becomes a late graduation

The gate is Sacred Heart's registration rule. Online NP students may register for a clinical course only after the academic advisor approves the site and preceptor and the NP clinical coordinator completes the documentation. No approved placement means no registration for that course.

Prerequisites then carry the delay forward, because each clinical course requires the ones before it:

When the missed course runs next matters as much as the chain. Sacred Heart's course descriptions page lists NU 561 for spring and summer, for example, so ask your advisor for the next offering of your course. Hybrid FNP/DNP students move through a cohort sequence, so raise any gap with the Clinical Placement Coordinator and your advisor early.

The rules that set your limits

The catalog and the online student guide word some of these differently. The catalog's university leave runs at least one semester with a return within two years, while the guide caps a program leave at one year, and the two continuous enrollment rules are phrased differently. Your academic advisor can tell you which version governs your program; the grades and progression page covers the related academic rules.

Withdraw, pause or stay enrolled

The right tool depends on the length of the gap. If you are registered in a course you cannot complete, a withdrawal by the calendar deadline earns a W and uses one of your two nursing-course withdrawals. If you will sit out more than a module or two, a program leave of absence protects your place, while skipping registration without one leads to administrative withdrawal and a readmission application.

NU 600 Continuous Enrollment is narrower than its name suggests: it exists for MSN/FNP students finishing clinical hours, not as a holding course while you search. Whichever path you take, the six-year clock keeps running from your first completed course.

Not attending is not withdrawing. Sacred Heart says non-attendance does not count as an official withdrawal, so file the form before the deadline rather than simply stepping away from the course.

Questions Sacred Heart students ask

Will one missed placement delay my graduation?

Often, because the clinical courses chain together. In the FNP sequence, NU 606 and NU 607 require NU 561, and NU 621 requires all three, so a missed NU 561 placement shifts everything after it. How far depends on when the course runs next and whether your advisor can rework your plan of study.

Could I double up on clinical courses to make up time?

Sacred Heart's guide says students generally take one course per module, and more than one needs advisor approval and good academic standing. NU 606 and NU 607 share the same prerequisites, so ask your advisor whether pairing them fits your plan. Two courses at once also means two approved placements and two clearances.

What happens if I go past the six-year limit?

The catalog sets the limit at six years from completing your first course, and only the dean can extend it; the online guide names the dean of the Davis & Henley College of Nursing. If a delay puts you near the limit, raise it with your advisor early rather than at the deadline.

Do I have to reapply if I take time off?

Only if you step away without an approved leave. The online guide says a student who skips registration for more than two consecutive modules, or one semester, without a leave of absence is administratively withdrawn and must apply for readmission. A program leave runs from one semester up to one year.

When can I graduate if my finish date moves?

Sacred Heart confers degrees in May, August and December. Apply for graduation through SPA at least one semester before you expect to complete the degree, and update the application with your advisor if your plan shifts again. Knowing the new conferral month early also helps you time certification and licensure steps.
