Sacred Heart University NP clinicals from Indiana
Indiana ranks among the more straightforward states on Sacred Heart University's map. The September 2026 disclosures say "Yes" for every FNP and PMHNP program, Indiana's board keeps graduate programs outside its review, and multistate licenses have been honored here since July 1, 2020. The thinking goes into the edges, because two of Indiana's larger population clusters belong to metros centered in Illinois and Kentucky.

Sacred Heart's table poses a single question for each program in each state: whether it meets that state's educational requirements for licensure or certification. For Indiana the answer below is "Yes" throughout, as of September 2026. Recheck before you enroll or move, since the catalog makes that your job.

Why the Indiana board stays out of it
Indiana's nursing board, part of the Professional Licensing Agency, limits its accreditation to Indiana schools training students toward an initial RN or LPN credential. By the board's own description, graduate programs and RN-BSN completion programs sit outside its review, and the rule listing eligible programs (848 IAC 1-2-4) addresses pre-licensure education alone. Our research found no filing an out-of-state graduate school makes before an NP student begins at an Indiana clinic.
That leaves Sacred Heart's own gates as the only ones between you and an Indiana clinic. Our approval page walks through them; plan longest for a brand-new site, whose contract Sacred Heart's guide says can take nine months.
Collaborative practice and your preceptor
AANP files Indiana under reduced practice, since the state requires NPs to keep a state-regulated collaborative agreement with a physician for some part of what they do. That agreement is the preceptor's business, yet it is a reason to confirm early that the whole practice, not only the NP, welcomes a student, and Sacred Heart's portal lists employer support as a preceptor requirement.
FNP students need more than adult primary care. NU 606 asks for 90 hours with children and NU 607 90 hours in women's health, so ask Indiana practices about pediatric and women's volume before you commit. For PMHNP students, NU 572 likewise reserves a minimum of 100 hours for patients under 18. Preceptor credentials are listed on our requirements page.
Northwest Indiana and the Louisville side
About 729,000 Hoosiers live inside the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro, and roughly 281,000 belong to Louisville's, per 2025 Census estimates. Crossing into those cities changes the rules. Illinois sits outside the compact, so a Chicago clinic requires an Illinois RN license, and Illinois code sets its own approval packet for schools from other states; see our Illinois guide.
Kentucky, by contrast, belongs to the compact, which lets an Indiana-issued multistate license reach Louisville sites. Kentucky's board asks nothing of out-of-state programs, though it expects APRN preceptors there to hold a Kentucky APRN license; our Kentucky guide explains. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Indiana's systems
Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood is the big market at about 2.2 million residents, with Fort Wayne next at about 466,000. Five systems come up in an Indiana search: IU Health, Parkview Health, Franciscan Health, Ascension St. Vincent and Community Health Network. Each writes its own student rules, and none holds a slot for Sacred Heart. One Sacred Heart rule matters with big systems: if your preceptor belongs to a partnering health organization, that organization signs off on the placement before Sacred Heart finalizes the preceptor.

Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Does Indiana's board have to approve Sacred Heart before my NP clinicals?
No such step was found. The board describes its reach as Indiana pre-licensure programs, with graduate and RN-BSN programs outside it. Approval of your site and preceptor comes from Sacred Heart, followed by the affiliation agreement.
Can I do hours at a Louisville practice while living in southern Indiana?
Often, yes. Both states are compact members, meaning your Indiana multistate license covers a Kentucky site, and Kentucky's board asks for no program approval. Kentucky does expect APRN preceptors there to hold a Kentucky APRN license. Sacred Heart still approves the preceptor and signs the agreement.
Can I use my Indiana employer as my clinical site?
Sacred Heart's online FAQ notes that many students do. Expect the Contract Request Form to ask about your job there and any working tie to the preceptor, and answer both plainly. Our workplace guide covers the details.
Is there an Indiana program that pays or credits preceptors?
Our state research found none for Indiana, so lead with what Sacred Heart gives its preceptors, including hours usable toward recertification and a possible affiliate title. Raise them in your first conversation, along with your course dates and the hours you need.
