Illinois clinicals for Sacred Heart University NP students
Sacred Heart University's September 2026 disclosures mark Illinois "Yes" for every FNP and PMHNP program. Two Illinois facts then drive the planning. Illinois never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, which puts your hours on an Illinois-issued RN license, and its nursing code describes a board sign-off for schools headquartered elsewhere whose students train at Illinois facilities.

Illinois's file for programs from other states
Illinois spells out, in Title 68 of its Administrative Code at section 1300.340(n), a packet that an out-of-state nursing program files before its students start clinical placements there:
- the executed agreement with each clinical facility
- a record showing the program's home-state board has approved or accredited it
- a letter asking for placement, with dates, agencies and units
- faculty qualification and preceptor forms
- a copy of the course syllabus
Illinois grants the approval for a two-year term; renewal is possible, and each year the program reports back. Oddly, the subsection lives in the part of the code written for RN programs and never says whether graduate or APRN programs fall under it, so ask your academic advisor how Sacred Heart treats it. The order matters either way: a signed facility contract is part of the packet, so the affiliation agreement, up to nine months for a new site, comes first.
An Illinois search that starts late leaves little room for both a new contract and any state paperwork, so begin a full course ahead.
No compact here: the Illinois RN license
Illinois has no compact bill pending, and multistate cards issued elsewhere confer nothing at an Illinois clinic. Sacred Heart's guide ties your license to geography, active and unencumbered wherever the clinical work happens, so an Illinois site means an Illinois RN license from IDFPR.
One statute looks like a shortcut and is not. Section 50-15(b)(10) of the Nurse Practice Act (225 ILCS 65) reaches out-of-state RNs enrolled in graduate or RN-to-BSN study, yet its words "in this State" tie it to Illinois-based programs. The RN license guide covers timing.
Preceptors under Illinois code and a reduced-practice climate
Section 1300.340(j) makes program faculty responsible for approving and orienting any facility staff member who precepts. That person stays reachable on site throughout the student's patient care and holds an RN license valid in the student's practice state. Sacred Heart layers its own criteria on top: FNP preceptors bring a year of primary care and, if physicians or APRNs, board certification, while PMHNP rotations call for a PMHNP or a psychiatry-certified physician.
AANP rates Illinois as reduced practice. Some Illinois settings still tie NPs to a written physician collaboration, and prescribing benzodiazepines or selected Schedule II drugs brings added practice and CE thresholds and a consulting physician. That arrangement belongs to your preceptor, but the practice itself should back the rotation, a requirement on Sacred Heart's preceptor portal.
Chicago, the Metro East, Peoria and Rockford
Chicago-Naperville-Elgin dominates, with roughly 8.7 million of its people on the Illinois side by the 2025 Census estimate. Peoria (about 364,000) and Rockford (about 337,000) follow, and some 672,000 Illinoisans belong to the St. Louis metro. Northwestern Medicine, Advocate Health Care, UChicago Medicine, Endeavor Health and OSF HealthCare are systems Illinois NP students approach; none is a standing Sacred Heart site.
Illinois also gives APRNs renewal credit for teaching. Precepting one student across a full semester or quarter adds 10 CE hours, and as many as 30 can count in a renewal cycle. The paperwork has to come from the school, which means Sacred Heart in your case, so ask how it documents precepting.

No. Illinois is not a compact member, so a multistate card from Wisconsin or anywhere else earns no privilege at a Chicago clinic. Get the Illinois RN license from IDFPR well before your clinical course, then upload it to your Health Account.
Does Illinois approve Sacred Heart's NP programs before clinicals begin?
Illinois code describes a two-year approval for out-of-state programs placing student nurses, built on five documents, one of them the signed facility contract. Its home in the RN program section leaves graduate programs unmentioned. Your academic advisor can tell you how Sacred Heart handles it.
What do Illinois preceptors get for taking a Sacred Heart student?
Each APRN student precepted for an academic term earns the preceptor 10 CE hours toward an Illinois renewal, capped at 30, once the school documents it. Sacred Heart's preceptor portal adds recertification hours, an affiliate title after credential review and continuing education offerings.
I live in the Metro East and work in Missouri. Where should I train?
Either state can work, but each raises its own license question. Missouri is a compact state, while an Illinois site requires an Illinois RN license. On whichever side you settle, Sacred Heart approves the preceptor and must have an affiliation agreement in place with the site.
