Sacred Heart clinicals for New Jersey nurses

New Jersey in the disclosures
Sacred Heart offers its online programs in New Jersey through NC-SARA, a membership held since January 11, 2017. The Board of Nursing, part of the Division of Consumer Affairs, regulates nursing in the state.

Joint protocols and your preceptor
AANP classes New Jersey as reduced practice, because an NP needs a physician collaborator and written joint protocols before ordering medications and devices. An NP preceptor works under such a protocol, and the collaborating physician may qualify as well: Sacred Heart's FNP rules welcome physicians as well as APRNs and PAs, provided the license comes from the practice state, physicians and APRNs are board certified, and a year of primary care stands behind them.
PMHNP students look for a PMHNP or a psychiatry-board-certified physician. The preceptor requirements page spells out each track.
Out-of-state program rules in New Jersey
Unlike in Massachusetts, research turned up no rule from the New Jersey Board of Nursing that requires advance approval when a school based elsewhere sends students to New Jersey sites. The Board's program regulations in N.J.A.C. 13:37 cover Board accreditation of programs at schools the state's Commission on Higher Education licenses, and its lone clinical-agency clause, 13:37-1.10(c), concerns in-state programs that send students to agencies beyond New Jersey. Guidance on the Board's website could not be reviewed; Sacred Heart, which says it meets board rules for students outside Connecticut, has the final word.
The pace-setter for a New Jersey placement is Sacred Heart's own sequence: approval, the Contract Request Form, then an affiliation agreement that can run up to nine months for a new site.
Where New Jersey NP students search
Census figures place roughly 7.1 million New Jersey residents inside the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro and about 1.4 million inside Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, with Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton as smaller markets. Hackensack Meridian Health, Cooper University Health Care of Camden, RWJBarnabas Health, Virtua Health and Atlantic Health System rank among the large systems. Each runs its own onboarding; none holds seats for Sacred Heart.

A preceptor whose office sits across the Hudson in Manhattan puts your hours in New York, which Sacred Heart's NP programs exclude; keep the site address on the New Jersey side. The New York rule explains why.
Your RN license and the compact
New Jersey has been an active compact state since November 15, 2021. Sacred Heart checks that your RN license is active, unencumbered and valid for the state of your clinical site, and a New Jersey multistate license reaches other compact states that have implemented it, including Connecticut since October 2025, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. It stops at New York, which is not a member, and at Massachusetts, which passed the compact but has yet to switch it on.

Does Sacred Heart's online FNP lead to NP licensure in New Jersey?
As of September 2026 Sacred Heart's disclosure says "Yes" for New Jersey on both the FNP and PMHNP programs, meaning the curriculum meets the state's educational requirements. Licensure itself runs through the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Confirm the answer with Sacred Heart before enrolling, since disclosure answers can change.
Can I train in Pennsylvania or Delaware from South Jersey?
Yes. Both are "Yes" states in Sacred Heart's disclosures, and both have implemented the compact, so a New Jersey multistate license works there. Delaware expects schools from other states to tell its Board of Nursing in advance, with proof of program approval and copies of agency agreements, before students use a Delaware facility. No comparable Pennsylvania rule turned up.
Is New Jersey short on preceptors for Sacred Heart students?
Sacred Heart's APRN preceptor portal flags New Jersey as one of its four high-need states for preceptors, next to Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For you, that argues for an early start: FNP students owe each next placement by week 10 of the preceding course, and a brand-new site's agreement takes months.
Does a New Jersey NP need special permission to precept me?
No separate New Jersey preceptor rule turned up. New Jersey's requirement falls on prescribing: NPs work under joint protocols with a physician collaborator, so your preceptor will already have one in place. Sacred Heart judges the preceptor by its own criteria: license, board certification, a year of experience and the practice's support.
