New York residents: where your Sacred Heart clinicals happen
Sacred Heart University's FNP and PMHNP programs meet New York's educational requirements, yet none of their clinical hours can be done in New York. If you live there, you train across a state line on that state's RN license. Students in Sacred Heart's non-licensure programs are the exception and may use New York agencies.

New York in Sacred Heart's disclosure table
As of September 2026, Sacred Heart's State Authorization page answers "Yes" for New York on its FNP and PMHNP programs, with a condition: by enrolling, you accept that clinical work happens beyond New York's borders. New York's nursing regulator is NYSED, the State Education Department, acting through its Office of the Professions and a State Board for Nursing.

Why New York is closed to NP hours
Sacred Heart cites requirements of the New York Office of the Professions, and the rule covers every APRN licensure program. Out-of-state and online nursing programs need NYSED's registration or approval ahead of any New York rotation, an NP program must itself be registered, and NYSED treats any rotation in a licensed profession as a physical presence needing sign-off, SARA membership or not. It even warns NP students that such rotations could be illegal. The New York clinical rule page lays out the neighboring-state route.
NYSED's carve-out for federal VA and Armed Forces facilities does not help here: Sacred Heart's disclosure rules out any clinical work in New York, federal sites included.
Choosing the state next door
Distance usually decides which neighbor you choose. From New York City and Westchester, Connecticut and New Jersey are closest; from the Capital Region, Massachusetts and Vermont; from Buffalo or Rochester, Pennsylvania. All read "Yes" for Sacred Heart's NP programs.
A Connecticut site adds the CHA Health & Safety Test, and Massachusetts publishes a board approval process for out-of-state programs. Hybrid FNP/DNP students matched by Sacred Heart's coordinator may be placed anywhere in Connecticut, New Jersey or other neighboring states, New York excluded. Your New York license stays home
New York stays outside the compact that lets RN licenses cross state lines, so your New York license is valid in New York alone. Plan on a second license for the state hosting your clinicals, active and unencumbered before your compliance deadline, because your Health Account must show RN licensure for that state. New York ties add one compliance item: anyone who lives or has lived in New York needs a New York Statewide Criminal History Record Search on top of Sacred Heart's yearly background check.
Non-NP tracks can train in New York
Tracks with no advanced practice license at the end, meaning the RN-BSN, the MSN tracks outside the NP specialties and the post-master's DNP, may complete preceptorships in New York agencies. For those practicums, obvious places to search include Mount Sinai, NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health and NewYork-Presbyterian, plus the University of Rochester Medical Center upstate. Each runs its own onboarding and none is a Sacred Heart site by default.
For NP students, note that Northwell completed its merger with Nuvance Health in 2025 and now runs Danbury Hospital and other former Nuvance hospitals in western Connecticut. Those sites sit outside New York for Sacred Heart's purposes and follow Connecticut's rules.

Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Can I use my New York RN license for clinicals in Connecticut?
No. A New York license has no multistate reach, and Sacred Heart wants an active, unencumbered license for the exact state hosting your hours. Apply for the host state's license early enough to have it on file when compliance is due.
Can PMHNP students from New York do psychiatric hours in a New York clinic?
No. The PMHNP is an APRN licensure program, so every one of its 540 hours, in NU 571 through NU 573, belongs outside New York, the 100 hours with patients under 18 in NU 572 included. Look across the border for a PMHNP or a psychiatry-board-certified physician.
Can I practice as an NP in New York after training elsewhere?
Sacred Heart's "Yes" for New York means its FNP and PMHNP programs meet New York's educational requirements, even with the hours done out of state. Licensing then runs through the Office of the Professions. AANP calls New York full practice with one catch: until an NP has logged 3,600 hours, a collaborating physician's written agreement and protocols stay in place.
What if I move to New York in the middle of the FNP?
Sacred Heart asks movers to file a change of address and recheck the disclosures, warning that skipping this step can block placements in the new state. After a move to New York, your remaining NP hours still happen outside the state, so line up a neighboring-state site and license before you relocate.
