Missouri NP clinicals for Sacred Heart University students
Every Sacred Heart University FNP and PMHNP program reads "Yes" for Missouri on the September 2026 disclosure table, and Missouri's compact membership makes licensing simple for most nurses. Two Missouri quirks shape the search instead: NPs there stay in a physician collaboration for their whole career, and both big metros straddle state lines, one of them into Kansas, a "No" state for Sacred Heart's NP programs.

Sacred Heart's answer for Missouri
Missouri appears on each licensure row as a state where the program meets educational requirements. Those rows can change, and Sacred Heart's catalog makes confirming them part of your job, so check again at admission and before any move. Distance enrollment itself rests on Sacred Heart's NC-SARA membership, dating from January 11, 2017.

Kansas City, St. Louis and the state lines
Of Kansas City's roughly 2.27 million residents, about 1.33 million live in Missouri; the rest are in Kansas. Kansas is one of the six states where Sacred Heart's FNP and PMHNP disclosures say "No". Sacred Heart's sources do not address a single Kansas-side rotation for a Missouri resident, so talk to your academic advisor before naming a Kansas clinic or signing a lease across the line. The Kansas page explains that "No".
St. Louis has about 2.81 million people, some 2.14 million on the Missouri side. Its Illinois portion reads "Yes" for Sacred Heart, but Illinois never joined the compact, so a clinic there calls for a separate Illinois license.
Career-long collaboration and your preceptor
AANP calls Missouri restricted. Missouri NPs never graduate out of physician collaboration: the arrangement lasts a whole career and carries ratio rules, chart-review duties and limits on controlled substances. Your NP preceptor, in other words, always has a physician partner in the background.
That opens a second door. Sacred Heart's FNP list includes board-certified MDs and DOs, along with PAs and APRNs, so a collaborating physician can precept an FNP student directly. PMHNP students look for a PMHNP or a psychiatry-certified physician, with the other licensed clinicians the inquiry form lists. Full criteria are on our preceptor requirements page.
A preceptor tax credit that leaves NPs out
Missouri does reward some preceptors through the income tax. The Community-Based Faculty Preceptor Tax Credit, in force since the start of 2023 under section 135.690, is open to doctors and PAs holding Missouri licenses when their learner is a Missouri medical or PA student. Each rotation has to be primary care and at least 120 hours long; one preceptor may claim three a year, and the state issues no more than 200 credits annually, in order of application.
NPs and nursing students fall outside its wording. If a physician agrees to take you for a Sacred Heart FNP rotation, the credit is off the table, and the honest move is to mention that in your first email.
No Board filing found, and compact licensing
Missouri's nursing board regulates the schools it approves under its education chapter, 20 CSR 2200-2. A separate exemption in section 335.081 covers supervised practice by students of approved professional nursing schools and is silent on schools approved in other states. The research for this page found no Missouri rule telling a program from elsewhere to register or notify the Board before its students train there, although the Board itself was not asked.

Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Can I do Sacred Heart clinicals on the Kansas side of Kansas City?
Ask your academic advisor before counting on it. Kansas is "No" on Sacred Heart's FNP and PMHNP disclosure table, meaning the programs are not listed as meeting Kansas's educational requirements for licensure, and the sources behind this page say nothing about one Kansas rotation for a Missouri resident. Plan around Missouri sites until Sacred Heart gives you an answer.
Will a Missouri physician who precepts me get the state tax credit?
It does not reach NP rotations. Section 135.690 names Missouri medical and PA students as the learners who qualify, and nurse practitioner students sit outside that list. A physician who takes you on does it for the teaching, supported by Sacred Heart's preceptor orientation and the clinical course information on its preceptor portal.
Does Missouri's collaborative practice rule apply to me as a student?
It governs licensed NPs, not students. During clinicals you work under your preceptor's supervision as part of a Sacred Heart course, and the collaborative arrangement is simply the framework your NP preceptor already practices in. It becomes your own concern after graduation, if you take a Missouri NP license.
Which license do I upload for a Missouri clinical site?
Upload whatever active, unencumbered license lets you practice in Missouri. For Missouri residents that is the Missouri multistate license. Residents of other member states can use their home state's multistate license. If your license was issued by a state outside the compact, apply for a Missouri license before your first rotation there.
