Mississippi clinicals in a Sacred Heart University NP program
Sacred Heart University marks Mississippi "Yes" for its FNP and PMHNP programs as of September 2026. The unusual part is who watches over nursing degrees there: Mississippi's higher-education trustees, known as IHL, expect to review any out-of-state program that runs clinicals in the state, and that review is measured in months.

All five NP licensure programs read "Yes" here. The hybrid BSN-to-DNP qualifies on paper, though its on-campus classes tie it to the Connecticut area in practice. IHL, not the Board of Nursing, reviews the program
Mississippi splits nursing oversight in an uncommon way. Its Board of Nursing approves practical nursing programs, while degree programs fall to IHL, the board governing the state's public universities. IHL counts a clinical practicum in Mississippi as physical presence, so an out-of-state undergraduate or graduate program sending students there is held to Mississippi's standards and reviewed by IHL's Nursing Education office.
- Distance authorizationThe program needs either SARA membership or, failing that, MCCA's non-SARA authorization for distance education. Sacred Heart's NC-SARA participation dates to January 11, 2017.
- IHL Nursing Education reviewIHL estimates the review at as long as three months, and its procedures manual (August 2024, Appendix S) wants the request in four or more months before a program based elsewhere begins.
- Sacred Heart's site agreementA clinic new to Sacred Heart still needs an affiliation agreement, which the MSN guide says can run up to nine months.

Where that leaves you
Nothing in our research confirms whether Sacred Heart has already been through an IHL review. It is a program-level matter, handled by Sacred Heart rather than by students, so bring it to Sacred Heart's NP clinical coordinator (formally, the MSN Online NP Programs Clinical Coordinator) in your first semester instead of week 10 of a clinical course. Compact license, collaborative practice
Mississippi's compact membership took effect January 19, 2018. Its Board says a compact-state resident in good standing may practice across member states and that employers may not insist on a remote-state license. On the student side, IHL's standards want APRN clinical students licensed as RNs, without encumbrance, in the state of the clinical, which matches Sacred Heart's rule.
AANP labels Mississippi reduced practice: an NP works inside a board-approved collaborative relationship, with a Mississippi-licensed physician or dentist as collaborator. Sacred Heart's portal asks preceptors to have their practice's support, so in a collaborative practice bring the physician into the conversation early. Jackson, the Gulf Coast and the Memphis edge
Jackson's metro has roughly 610,000 residents, Hattiesburg around 158,000 and Gulfport-Biloxi around 431,000, while some 278,000 Mississippians live in the Tennessee-anchored Memphis metro. Among the systems NP students contact: Forrest Health, UMMC, North Mississippi Health Services, Singing River Health System, and Baptist Memorial Health Care, a Memphis company that also runs Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Treat each as a lead, never as a confirmed Sacred Heart site. No Mississippi preceptor incentive program turned up in the state research.

Why can Mississippi clinicals take longer to arrange?
Two clocks can run at once. IHL treats a practicum in the state as program presence and reviews out-of-state programs, which can last as long as three months, with a four-month filing lead in its manual. Separately, a new clinic needs Sacred Heart's affiliation agreement. Starting both conversations early keeps either from holding up your course.
Can I train at a Tennessee clinic if I live near Memphis?
Possibly. A Tennessee clinic makes it a Tennessee rotation under Tennessee rules, and Tennessee reads Yes on Sacred Heart's FNP and PMHNP table. Tennessee is also a compact state, so a Mississippi multistate license should carry over. Your academic advisor still has to approve the site, and it needs an affiliation agreement, so ask first.
Does reduced practice change who can precept me in Mississippi?
Sacred Heart applies one standard nationwide. FNP students can learn from a physician, a PA or an APRN, with board certification expected of physicians and APRNs and a year of primary care behind them; PMHNP students need a PMHNP or a psychiatrist among the listed options. In Mississippi the difference is context, because your NP preceptor practices inside a collaborative agreement.
Does Mississippi's Board of Nursing need to hear from me?
Not as a student. The Board approves practical nursing programs, and degree programs sit with IHL, which deals with the school rather than individual students. Your part is an unencumbered RN license valid in Mississippi, uploaded to the Health Account, and early notice to Sacred Heart that your site is in Mississippi.
