Fifteen days' notice to the ABN

Alabama keeps watch on out-of-state programs at the clinical level (Ala. Admin. Code r. 610-X-3-.09). Before an advanced practice program from elsewhere puts a student in an Alabama clinic, it writes to the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) announcing the rotation, with supporting approval paperwork, no later than 15 days ahead. The ABN's answer on skipping that step is short: no Board approval, no Alabama clinicals.

Sacred Heart, as the program, prepares and sends it, and its out-of-state standing with the ABN runs by calendar year. Since the letter is built from your placement's details, a site whose nursing leader is known early leaves the filing nothing to wait on.

Reduced practice and who can precept you

AANP, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, puts Alabama in its reduced-practice group: every Alabama NP keeps a state-regulated collaborative agreement with a physician, and the Board of Medical Examiners shares oversight with the nursing board. For the FNP, Sacred Heart accepts APRNs, PAs, MDs and DOs licensed where they practice, board certified if physicians or APRNs, with a year or more of primary care. Birmingham, a metro of roughly 1.2 million, is home to UAB Medicine. Mobile offers two systems, the University of South Alabama's USA Health and Infirmary Health, while Huntsville has Huntsville Hospital Health System and Montgomery has Baptist Health. Treat them as places to ask, not standing offers.

APTIP follows the school, not the preceptor

APTIP, the Alabama Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, trims state income tax for preceptors who teach without pay in medically underserved rural parts of Alabama, rotation by rotation (each one 160 hours). Alabama's statewide AHEC office administers it, and the state revenue department dates it from the 2024 tax year with an end date of September 29, 2031.

Licensing: compact membership since 2020

Sacred Heart's student guide wants an active, unencumbered license in every clinical state, and the ABN applies its own version to post-licensure students: hold an Alabama RN license or a multistate one issued by a compact member. Alabama's compact membership took effect on the first day of 2020, so a multistate card from your home compact state already reaches across the Alabama line; otherwise, apply for Alabama's own. Is Sacred Heart's online FNP open to Alabama nurses?

Can a rural Alabama preceptor claim APTIP for teaching a Sacred Heart student?

No. APTIP credit attaches only to rotations for programs physically located in Alabama, and Sacred Heart is a Connecticut university. Raise it before the preceptor does, then describe what Sacred Heart offers preceptors, such as an affiliate title and continuing education.

My multistate license is from Georgia. Does it cover an Alabama clinic?

Yes. Georgia and Alabama both belong to the compact, and the ABN accepts a party state's multistate license for post-licensure clinical work.
