Iowa guide to Sacred Heart University's online NP programs
Every Sacred Heart University FNP and PMHNP program shows "Yes" for Iowa in the September 2026 disclosures. What sets Iowa apart is how much it writes down: a to-do list for nursing programs based in other states, and an advanced practice rule steering most of your supervised time toward particular preceptors. Iowa's checklist for schools from elsewhere
Iowa's nursing board, part of DIAL (the state's inspections, appeals and licensing department), leaves out-of-state programs unapproved. It does post a to-do list for any of them whose students practice in Iowa:
- clearance to operate in Iowa, sought from the Bureau of Iowa College Aid
- compliance with Iowa law alongside the home state's rules
- data for the Board on request
- an active Iowa or multistate license for every faculty member and preceptor working in Iowa
- clinical contracts that divide the parties' duties, keep student learning under faculty control, come up for yearly review and explain termination
Those contract terms end up in the affiliation agreement Sacred Heart negotiates with your site, which can need as long as nine months when the site is new. Whether Sacred Heart has finished the College Aid step is not in our research, so confirm it with your academic advisor.
Which preceptors Iowa expects for most of your hours
Under 481 IAC 616.16, the ARNP preceptorship rule, most of a student's supervised experience should come from an ARNP or a physician working in the role and population focus the student will hold. Preceptors must be licensed under the law of their own practice state, and the written preceptorship agreement is revisited annually. Approval of any preceptor rests jointly with the program and the facility.
Sacred Heart's lists run broader: PAs qualify for FNP rotations, and the PMHNP inquiry form even offers social work (LCSW) and mental health counseling credentials. In Iowa, anchor most FNP hours with a family NP or primary care physician, and most PMHNP hours with a PMHNP or psychiatrist. See preceptor requirements.
An Iowa placement built mostly on a PA or a counselor may clear Sacred Heart and still sit awkwardly with Iowa's ARNP rule, so ask your advisor first.
Your license: the student exemption skips RNs
The student carve-out in Iowa Code 152.1 is written for nursing students without a license. Any nursing license from any state, whether RN, LPN or ARNP, switches it off, so it never covers a Sacred Heart NP student. Iowa instead expects licensed students at its clinical sites to carry an active Iowa or multistate license and to work within Iowa Code. The compact took effect in Iowa on January 19, 2018, and Sacred Heart's Health Account asks for the RN license of the state where the clinical hours happen. Details: RN license guide.
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Quad Cities
AANP counts Iowa as full practice. The 2025 Census estimates show about 759,000 people in the Des Moines-West Des Moines metro, 279,000 around Cedar Rapids, 183,000 in the Iowa City metro, and 175,000 Iowans on their side of Davenport-Moline-Rock Island. MercyOne, UnityPoint Health and University of Iowa Health Care are systems Iowa NP students often contact; none is a committed Sacred Heart site.

Could most of my Iowa FNP hours be with a PA?
Sacred Heart accepts PAs for FNP courses, but Iowa's ARNP preceptorship rule expects most experiences to be with an ARNP or physician in the student's role and population focus. A PA for some hours is easier to square than for most. Confirm the plan with your academic advisor.
Does my Nebraska multistate license cover an Iowa clinic?
Yes. Nebraska and Iowa both joined the compact in 2018, and Iowa lets licensed students train at its sites on a multistate license from any member state. Upload it to your Health Account so Sacred Heart sees a license valid where you train.
What does an Iowa nurse gain by precepting me?
An Iowa nurse who precepts a student for at least 60 hours inside an organized preceptorship can claim 6 contact hours at renewal, once the supervising school documents it. Sacred Heart adds its own preceptor benefits; see our page for preceptors.
Has Sacred Heart completed Iowa's College Aid approval?
Our research does not show it. Iowa asks out-of-state programs to get approval to operate through the Bureau of Iowa College Aid, and Sacred Heart is an NC-SARA member. Ask your academic advisor, and check Sacred Heart's state authorization page, before you commit to an Iowa site.
