Wyoming nurses in Sacred Heart University's online programs
Wyoming gets a "Yes" from Sacred Heart University on all of its FNP and PMHNP programs in the September 2026 disclosures. The Wyoming State Board of Nursing asks no approval of graduate programs from elsewhere, but it does expect a letter: a post-licensure program tells the Board in writing before a student's clinical learning in Wyoming begins.

By Sacred Heart's own account, its NP programs satisfy Wyoming's educational standards for licensure, while the Clinical Nurse Leader track is marked "Yes" for all states. Those answers date from September 2026; the catalog makes rechecking them your task before you enroll or relocate.

What the WSBN's Chapter 6 asks of Sacred Heart
Wyoming's education rules sort programs by level. Graduate programs (APRN, MSN, DNP) and RN-to-BSN completion programs based outside Wyoming skip Board approval, yet three conditions still apply, and each belongs to the school:
- AuthorizationEither NC-SARA approval or registration with Wyoming's education department. Sacred Heart's SARA participation dates to January 11, 2017.
- A letter to the BoardThe program writes to the WSBN when one of its students will train in Wyoming, and the Board publishes a sample letter to follow.
- A signed contractA written contract with the clinical facility must be in place before any clinical day, with a copy kept on file for the Board. For Sacred Heart, that is the affiliation agreement your Contract Request Form sets in motion.
Pre-licensure programs face more: they must ask permission and supply faculty and preceptor license records. That path does not touch Sacred Heart's online students. The affiliation agreement page explains the up-to-nine-month lead time for a new site.
Full practice, and a compact waiting on two states
AANP rates Wyoming full practice, so an FNP preceptor may run a clinic with no physician involved. Sacred Heart's screen travels with you to Wyoming: a year of primary care for FNP preceptors, board certification for the physicians and NPs among them, and a psychiatric specialty for PMHNP preceptors. Wyoming has also adopted the APRN Compact in state law, as have Utah, Delaware and both Dakotas. It needs seven member states before it operates, so for now a Wyoming APRN license stays a Wyoming license.
Cheyenne, Casper, Gillette and the long drives
Wyoming's biggest markets are small. The 2025 Census estimates give the Cheyenne metro about 102,900 people, Casper about 80,500 and the Gillette area about 48,100. In Casper, Banner Wyoming Medical Center belongs to Banner Health, a system from Arizona; Gillette has Campbell County Health; Laramie's Ivinson Memorial Hospital is affiliated with UCHealth; and Sheridan Memorial Hospital and Cheyenne Regional Medical Center round out the list. Treat all of them as search targets rather than confirmed Sacred Heart sites; research found no Wyoming preceptor incentive.
Sacred Heart's FNP page tells applicants to expect possible long trips to clinical sites. In Wyoming, list every practice within a workable drive at the start, including where a PMHNP student's NU 572 hours with patients under 18 will come from.
Flying east for residencies
The online FAQ schedules two on-campus residencies in Fairfield, Connecticut, for online MSN FNP students: one in NU 552, one near the end in NU 621; certificate students come once a year. Residency is pass/fail, and failing it fails the clinical course. Residency dates stay off public pages, so ask early and book travel around your clinical schedule; see residencies.

Does Wyoming's Board approve Sacred Heart's NP programs?
It does not need to. Chapter 6 exempts graduate and RN-to-BSN programs from other states from Board approval, though like every outside program they need NC-SARA approval or registration with Wyoming's education department. Sacred Heart must still notify the WSBN in writing and hold a written contract with your clinical site.
Who sends the letter to the Wyoming State Board of Nursing?
The program does. The rule places the written notice on the school, and the Board even publishes a sample letter to follow. Your part is getting Sacred Heart what it needs early: an approved preceptor, the site's contract contact and a submitted Contract Request Form.
How many trips to Connecticut will a Wyoming FNP student make?
The online FAQ lists two on-campus residencies for the MSN FNP, during NU 552 and NU 621, while the catalog describes a yearly daylong residency. Post-master's certificate students attend one a year. The student guide and your academic advisor have the dates.
Is the RN-to-BSN treated differently in Wyoming?
The same Chapter 6 track applies: no Board approval, but written notice and a signed facility contract. Sacred Heart already wants RN-BSN students to name a preceptor and site nine months out, which leaves room for both steps. Your academic advisor reviews the preceptor's CV and RN license first.
