Liability insurance for Sacred Heart clinicals, track by track
Sacred Heart names a different policy for different students. NP students show Nurse Practitioner Student Liability Insurance before their first clinical course, FNP/DNP students carry NP student malpractice insurance, CNL, Nursing Education and NMEL students carry RN liability insurance, and RN-BSN students document professional liability right before any course with field work.

Which policy your track names
Each student guide words the requirement a little differently. Match your policy to your own track's wording; liability insurance is one of the items Sacred Heart checks in your Health Account before it clears you.
| Track | Policy the guide names | Proof due |
|---|---|---|
| Online MSN FNP and MSN PMHNP | Nurse Practitioner Student Liability Insurance | Before your first clinical course |
| Post-master's FNP and PMHNP certificates | Nurse Practitioner Student Liability Insurance | Before your first clinical course |
| Hybrid BSN-to-DNP (FNP) | Nurse Practitioner Student Malpractice Insurance | With FNP/DNP compliance: 30 days before NU 552, then yearly |
| Online MSN CNL, Nursing Education and NMEL | RN Liability Insurance | With compliance, 2 weeks before the clinical course |
| RN-BSN and RN-BSN-MSN | Professional liability insurance | Immediately before NU 376 or NU 387 |
Post-master's DNP students should confirm the policy type in the PM-DNP student guide or with their academic advisor. The table follows the 2026-27 editions; if you entered under a different year's guide, check its wording too.
Why NP students need a student NP policy
The policy names follow the role you train in. In FNP and PMHNP clinicals you assess, diagnose and propose treatment under a preceptor, which is advanced-practice work, and the guides ask NP students for coverage as a nurse practitioner student rather than the RN policy many already carry through work.
The MSN guide says "Student Liability Insurance" and the FNP/DNP guide says "Student Malpractice Insurance". Read your certificate against your own guide's phrase. If the certificate lists you only as a registered nurse, it does not match the item your guide names, and if the wording differs in some other way, ask the Clinical Placement Team before you upload.
Admission already involves insurance: the 2026-27 graduate catalog asks MSN applicants for individual and professional liability insurance. So the question at clinical time is rarely whether you have a policy. It is whether the policy is the right type and still in force.
RN liability for CNL, Nursing Education, NMEL and RN-BSN
CNL, Nursing Education and NMEL practicums place you in care-management, teaching and leadership roles as a registered nurse, and the guide asks these students for RN Liability Insurance. NU 619 includes direct patient care and NU 690 may, so pick a policy that covers patient-facing RN work.
These tracks run eight-week clinical modules with a compliance date two weeks before each clinical course, so check that the policy runs past the last day of the module, not only the first. The CNL program page lists that track's practicum courses.
RN-BSN and RN-BSN-MSN students show proof of professional liability insurance right before each course that includes clinical or field work, which means NU 376 and NU 387. The undergraduate catalog adds liability insurance before those two courses, next to the RN license required from NU 335 onward.
When proof is due and how long it has to last
Your certificate is uploaded to the Health Account alongside every other compliance document. For MSN FNP and PMHNP students the whole compliance file is due by week 10 of NU 552; post-master's certificate students are due by week 10 of NU 550 or NU 509. The Health Account page lists every program's date.
Many policies run for a year, while the online MSN FNP and PMHNP take two and a half years. Compliance for MSN NP students runs until graduation, so note the renewal date when you upload and renew before it arrives. A policy that lapses after clearance counts as a compliance gap, which the guide answers with removal from the clinical course.
An RN-only policy uploaded for an NP clinical course does not match what the guide names: check that the certificate says nurse practitioner student before your compliance date.
Insurance is one piece of clearance
Coverage alone does not clear you. Before the Cleared for Clinical email goes out, Sacred Heart looks for three things: a complete compliance file, a preceptor it has approved and a site agreement in force. Insurance is one item inside the first. The Cleared for Clinical page sets out all three.
Two other items get confused with insurance. You need an active RN license in each state where you train, covered on the RN license page. And the affiliation agreement binds Sacred Heart and the site to each other; your personal policy sits outside it and does not replace it.
If Sacred Heart expects particular coverage amounts, you will find them in your student guide or your track's Blackboard clinical requirements organization. Check there before you buy, and keep the full certificate, not only a receipt, for your upload.
How we help you get it right the first time
Insurance is quick to buy and easy to buy wrong. When we build your placement plan, we note the policy type your track names and the date proof is due alongside the preceptor search, so the certificate is ready when your Health Account asks for it.
We find a preceptor in your community whose license and board certification fit your course, identify the person who handles the site's contracts, and keep checking in while the course runs. If your site or module changes, we recheck the dates your policy has to cover. Fill in the form on this page to begin, or see how it works.
Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Does my RN malpractice policy cover Sacred Heart NP clinicals?
Not for the item Sacred Heart names. NP students are asked for Nurse Practitioner Student Liability Insurance, or NP student malpractice insurance in the FNP/DNP, and a policy that covers you only as a registered nurse does not match that wording. Ask your insurer whether it offers a nurse practitioner student policy, then check the certificate before uploading.
When do Sacred Heart NP students need proof of liability insurance?
Before the first clinical course, and in practice by your compliance date: week 10 of NU 552 for the MSN FNP and PMHNP, week 10 of NU 550 or NU 509 for the certificates. After that, keep the policy in force until you graduate, since MSN NP compliance never switches off mid-program.
Does Sacred Heart provide student liability insurance?
The guides ask students to show proof of their own policy, and compliance costs fall on the student. So plan to buy the policy yourself, in the type your track names, and upload the certificate to your Health Account by the due date.
Do CNL students need nurse practitioner insurance?
No. The guide asks CNL, Nursing Education and NMEL students for RN Liability Insurance, since their practicums are RN roles in care management, teaching or leadership. Make sure the policy covers patient care if your practicum involves it, and that its dates run through the end of the eight-week module.
Do RN-BSN students need liability insurance for NU 376?
Yes. The RN-BSN guide wants proof of professional liability coverage just ahead of each course with field work, and the undergraduate catalog names liability insurance as a requirement before both NU 376 and NU 387. Upload it by the compliance date the Clinical Placement Coordinator gives you.
