Sacred Heart University's online NP programs in Michigan
In the September 2026 version of Sacred Heart University's licensure disclosures, Michigan gets a "Yes" on every FNP and PMHNP line. The planning hinge is licensing. Michigan stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, with only a pending bill (HB 4246), so clinical hours in Detroit, Grand Rapids or Lansing run on a Michigan RN license, and Michigan attaches training requirements to that license.

Getting the Michigan RN license first
Sacred Heart's student guide links each clinical state to a license: whichever state hosts your hours must have issued you an active, unencumbered RN license (or a multistate privilege), and a copy sits in your Health Account. A multistate card from Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin buys nothing in Michigan while the state sits outside the compact.
Michigan's licensing guide adds three items for RN applicants. Human trafficking awareness training is a one-off requirement; implicit bias training runs 2 hours and must fall within the five years preceding licensure; and a criminal background check completes the list. Allow time for all three, since FNP placements are due by week 10 of the preceding course; our week-10 page has the detail.
Moving to Michigan from a compact state? Your multistate license stops covering you at the state line, so apply for the Michigan license as soon as the move is certain.
What Michigan's board does and does not regulate
As far as our research reaches, Michigan's nursing board asks nothing of a school from another state before its students begin Michigan clinicals: no approval, no notice. Its program-approval rules (starting at R 338.10301) and its nursing education page address schools inside Michigan. For licensing graduates of schools elsewhere, Michigan relies on national accreditation (CCNE, ACEN or CNEA) instead of Board approval. The Board itself was not contacted.
Sacred Heart's accreditation fits that route: CCNE accredits its master's and DNP programs through June 30, 2030, and the post-graduate APRN certificate through June 30, 2031. See accreditation.
Restricted practice and vetting a Michigan preceptor
AANP ranks Michigan as restricted, because controlled-substance prescribing by NPs there depends on a physician's delegation. That arrangement is the preceptor's own; what matters for you is that the practice backs a student rotation, which Sacred Heart's portal lists as a requirement.
A Michigan NP holds a state specialty certification, which Michigan issues only to someone who already has Michigan RN licensure and a Board-recognized national certification. That lines up with Sacred Heart's request for board certification from APRN preceptors, so ask a Michigan NP for both documents at the start. Physicians and PAs round out the FNP list; for PMHNP courses, look for a PMHNP or a psychiatrist board certified in psychiatry. Criteria in full: preceptor requirements.
Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint
By the 2025 Census estimates, metro Detroit (Detroit-Warren-Dearborn) is home to about 4.39 million people; Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood counts roughly 1.18 million, with Flint (about 401,000) and Lansing-East Lansing (about 480,000) behind them. Michigan NP students approach systems such as Corewell Health and University of Michigan Health (Michigan Medicine); Trinity Health Michigan, Henry Ford Health and McLaren Health Care come up too. None of them is a reserved Sacred Heart site.
The health department's Office of Nursing Programs once ran a pilot, jointly with the College of Nursing at Michigan State University, that paid incentives to people precepting MSU's family and psychiatric NP students. It has ended and was limited to MSU; our research found no Michigan preceptor tax credit either.

Does an Ohio multistate license cover a Michigan clinic?
No. Michigan remains outside the compact, and HB 4246 was still pending when our research was done. A Michigan site needs a Michigan RN license, and Sacred Heart's Health Account should show it before you are cleared for clinical.
I'm moving to Michigan partway through the program. What should I do first?
Tell Sacred Heart and start the Michigan license right away. Sacred Heart's disclosures put the licensure check for any new state on the student and warn that skipping it can block clinical placements there. Our clinicals outside Connecticut page covers moves.
Is there money for Michigan preceptors who take a Sacred Heart student?
Not from the state, based on our research. Michigan's preceptor incentive pilot has ended and served only Michigan State University students, and no Michigan preceptor tax credit appears in our sources. Sacred Heart's own preceptor benefits are summarized on our page for preceptors.
Does Michigan's Board of Nursing need to approve Sacred Heart's NP program?
Not for your clinical hours, as far as our research shows; its approval rules cover programs located in Michigan. At licensure, Michigan looks for national accreditation such as the CCNE status Sacred Heart holds. Placement approvals come from Sacred Heart itself.
