Maine nurses can take Sacred Heart University's online FNP and PMHNP programs: the September 2026 disclosures answer "Yes" for Maine on each of them. Maine's rulebook says little about schools from other states, so the Maine-specific planning centers on your preceptor, because Maine NPs reach independent practice only after 24 months of supervised or institution-based work.

How the disclosure table treats Maine
Sacred Heart rates every licensure program against each state's educational requirements, and Maine's line is "Yes" across the board as of September 2026. Sacred Heart's catalog assigns the verification to students, so reread the line before you enroll and again if you plan to move.

A quiet rulebook for visiting programs
As far as our research shows, Maine's nursing board has published nothing on schools from other states that bring students to Maine clinics. Chapter 7 of its rules deals with approving prelicensure schools located in Maine, visiting programs never come up in it, and the Board's education pages link to no other guidance.
Maine law does excuse some students from licensure (32 MRSA ยง2103(2)), but its wording targets people in board-approved programs working toward a first license. That describes prelicensure students, not RNs in NP programs. In practice, you train on your own license, and the placement rests on Sacred Heart's chain of approvals, from the academic advisor through the Contract Request Form to a signed affiliation agreement.
Maine's 24 months and your preceptor
AANP puts Maine in its full-practice group, conditionally. For their first 24 months, Maine NPs practice either with a physician or NP supervising them or as employees of a clinic or hospital that has a physician as medical director; independent practice follows.
Sacred Heart sets a one-year experience minimum for preceptors (primary care for FNP rotations, psychiatric mental health care for PMHNP ones), so an NP in the second year of Maine's transition period can meet it. That NP still practices under supervision or inside an institution, though, and Sacred Heart's portal expects the preceptor's practice or employer to back the arrangement. Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
The Portland-South Portland metro is Maine's largest, about 578,000 people by 2025 Census estimates; Bangor (roughly 158,000) and Lewiston-Auburn (roughly 116,000) trail well behind. Among the systems Maine NP students contact are Northern Light Health and MaineHealth, along with MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare; each decides on students independently, and none has committed to Sacred Heart.
Maine has used the compact since January 19, 2018. Sacred Heart requires an active, unencumbered license in every state where you train, so a Maine multistate license covers Maine sites and any other member state, including New Hampshire. Massachusetts enacted the compact, but its board is aiming for May 2027 implementation, and until then training there takes a Massachusetts license; see our Massachusetts guide.
Getting to Fairfield from Maine
Residencies stay in New England for you. Going by the online FAQ, an MSN FNP student makes two Fairfield trips, for competency residencies of a day or two in NU 552 and again in NU 621; the catalog instead describes one daylong residency a year, and certificate students attend annually. Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Can a Maine NP still in the 24-month transition precept me?
Possibly. Sacred Heart's floor for preceptors is a year of experience in the relevant clinical field, so an NP past that point may qualify on paper. Because that NP still works under a supervising clinician or inside an institution, confirm that the practice supports the rotation before the approval request goes to Sacred Heart.
Does Maine's Board of Nursing need anything from Sacred Heart before I start?
No Maine requirement was found. The Board's education rule is about approving Maine-based prelicensure schools and never addresses visiting programs. Your clearance comes from Sacred Heart: approvals and a signed affiliation agreement, then the "Cleared for Clinical" email once your Health Account is complete.
I live near New Hampshire. Can I do my hours there?
New Hampshire reads "Yes" on Sacred Heart's table and has been a compact state since 2018, so a Maine multistate license reaches it. The same approval and affiliation-agreement steps apply to a New Hampshire site. Read our New Hampshire guide for that state's own rules.
Do Maine PMHNP students need hours with children?
Yes. In NU 572, a minimum of 100 hours involve patients under 18, and the rule travels with the course to any state. In Maine, ask potential psychiatric preceptors about their pediatric and adolescent caseload before you settle on a site for that course.
