The 1,000-hour rule in Sacred Heart University's DNP programs
Both Sacred Heart University DNP programs set a 1,000-hour floor, but they count toward it differently. Post-master's DNP students must reach 1,000 practice hours overall and may credit documented MSN clinical hours, while hybrid BSN-to-DNP students build all 1,000 clinical and practice hours inside the program, after the bachelor's degree. The catalog's 435-hour practice figure measures something narrower, and the difference matters before you choose a project site.

Two DNPs, one 1,000-hour floor
The PM/DNP student guide sets "a minimum total of 1000 practice hours" for every post-master's DNP student. The FNP/DNP guide requires at least 1,000 post-baccalaureate hours, clinical and practice together, with no fewer than 500 of each. The number is shared; what counts toward it is not.

Counting MSN hours in the post-master's DNP
Sacred Heart's program page puts it plainly: "Count your MSN clinical hours toward DNP-required practice hours." The PM/DNP guide adds the condition that matters, official documentation from the master's program. Request that record early, because the rest of your hour plan is built on it.
The courses then carry 435 practice hours on both the leadership and education tracks: 15 in NU 700, 60 in NU 710, 30 in NU 720, 30 in NU 743, 30 in each of NU 821 to NU 824, 30 in each elective, and 60 in each of NU 810 and NU 820. Add your documented MSN hours to 435. If the sum reaches 1,000, the courses finish the job; if it falls short, your DNP advisor and the PM/DNP guide set how the rest is scheduled.
The catalog also lists two optional supplemental courses outside the degree credits, NU 741 and NU 742, each with a required practicum component. Whether either belongs in your plan is a question for your advisor.
The BSN-to-DNP split: 615 clinical, 450 practice
In the hybrid BSN-to-DNP, the guide's course table assigns 615 clinical hours to the nurse practitioner courses: 15 in NU 552, 120 in NU 562, 180 in each of NU 622 and NU 632, and 60 in each of NU 831 and NU 832. Practice hours total 450 across the doctoral courses, from 15 in each of NU 549 and NU 700 up to 60 in each of NU 710, NU 810 and NU 820.
Together that is 1,065 hours, above the 1,000 floor, and the clinical side clears its 500 minimum comfortably. On the guide's own figures, though, 450 practice hours sit below the 500-practice-hour minimum it also states, so ask your DNP advisor how the remaining practice hours are planned for your cohort. The catalog's 435 and why it conflicts
The 2026-2027 catalog's BSN-to-DNP page describes the DNP project with "a minimum of 435 practice hours gained through classroom and immersion experiences." That is the same number the post-master's DNP courses carry, and it falls well short of both the 450 practice hours in the FNP/DNP guide's table and the guide's 1,000-hour post-baccalaureate minimum.
Read the catalog line as describing one slice of the degree rather than the finish line. When the figures disagree, check the 2026-27 FNP/DNP student guide and confirm with your academic advisor which applies to your cohort. Planning for the guide's 1,000 hours, with at least 500 clinical and 500 practice, satisfies every version Sacred Heart has published.
Practice sites, mentors and project clearance
Practice hours run through a site and an external practice mentor, whom the guides have you name during NU 821 DNP Project Topic Development. Mentor qualifications are set out on the preceptor requirements page; for hour planning, what matters is that the mentor's position gives you real access to the organization where the project runs.
The Contract Request Form and the practice mentor agreement must be in before NU 823 DNP Project Proposal Presentation ends. Because contracting a new site can run 6 to 8 months, the FNP/DNP guide wants that work started in NU 821, and the PM/DNP guide names NU 823. Start at the earlier point.
In the FNP/DNP guide, the NU 823 Practice Site & Implementation form goes to your advisor and to Clinical Placement, Sacred Heart's IRB must approve the project, and a Cleared for DNP project email is required in NU 810 and NU 820. The PM/DNP guide applies the same final-clearance criteria. The affiliation agreements page explains contract timing.
Logging DNP hours
Hours go in E*Value. The PM/DNP guide tells students they will log project implementation hours there, and the FNP/DNP guide lists practice hour logs alongside clinical logs, SOAP notes and site visit records. Your mentor weighs in twice, at the proposal presentation and at the final one, and fills out a mentor evaluation in each of NU 810 and NU 820.
NU 810 and NU 820 each hold 60 practice hours of immersion, planned by you around a self-assessment against the AACN Essentials competencies. Build the log around those competencies from day one so each entry maps to what you are evaluated on. The E*Value page covers the system itself.
Keep paid work and practice hours apart. The DNP guides insist that practice hours stay clearly separate from the job you already hold, so log only project time, never your regular shifts, even when the project runs where you work.

Questions Sacred Heart students ask
Does my Sacred Heart DNP practice mentor need a doctorate?
No. Both DNP guides say the practice mentor will not necessarily be a DNP-prepared advanced practice nurse. Expertise in your project area and a role that gives you access inside the organization matter more than the letters after the mentor's name, and the guides list physicians, doctorally prepared professionals and senior nurse administrators among the possibilities.
Do NP clinical hours in the BSN-to-DNP count toward the 1,000?
Yes. The FNP/DNP guide's minimum is 1,000 clinical and practice hours combined after the bachelor's degree, with at least 500 of each. The 615 clinical hours from NU 552 through NU 832 count on the clinical side, and the practice hours from the doctoral courses and project count on the other.
Is the NU 552 observation part of the BSN-to-DNP total?
The guide's course table lists NU 552 at 15 clinical hours within the 615, while its placement section describes 8 to 10 observation hours arranged by the student. Log whatever the course requires in E*Value, and ask course faculty which figure the table's total assumes for your cohort.
What if my MSN clinical hours were never formally documented?
The PM/DNP guide counts master's hours only with official documentation, so contact your master's program early for a record of your clinical hours. If a record cannot be produced, talk with your DNP advisor about how the missing hours will be covered inside your Sacred Heart plan before you commit to a project timeline.
